Learning for Life Academy Blog

We have decided to create another blog specifically for our Learning for Life Academy. On this blog you'll be able to read and see what we get up to. You'll also be able to leave a comment.

DT - Structures

OUR design process: DESIGN - BUILD - TEST - EVALUATE.

Through out Learning Connections work we've been looking at structures, how they are made, how they are designed to suit a purpose and how to test and evaluate what we make.

We started off with a simple design brief to design, construct and test a bridge in 60 minutes. Almost everyone did it, we quickly found out that our structures weren't the best. Some were able to carry the water, others simply weren't up to the job. We then spent ages evaluating our designs, and the process we used.

We decided that we needed to know how to measure properly, including calculating complex angles on our 3D structures. We thought more about our designs, we researched and tested different ways of connecting the art straws together. We also took our time and more care.

Our finished results are a lot more aesthetically pleasing and they all work! We really enjoyed this project. It was cool.

Italy!

In Blakedown school we were learning about Italy . On Wednesday 19th September 2007 my Aunty Sarah who is married to my Uncle Antonio, came into my school to talk to class 4 about Italy. My Dads side of the family are from Colle Sanita near Naples in Italy, my Dad was born there and he came to England when he was 4 years old his name is Giuseppe. My Aunty Sarah goes to Italy a lot and she brought in food, books, pictures, coffee cups, flags, examples of Italian language and loads more stuff to show us all. I showed everyone photo's of when I went to Rome in April and saw the Pope on Easter Sunday. Aunty Sarah told the class lots of information about Italy and class 4 knew a lot about Italy too and asked lots of questions. We practiced counting in Italian too. My Aunty Sarah was magnifico and the afternoon learning about Italy was Bellissimo ( wonderful ). I would like to say, 'Grazie molto per venire alla mia scuola parlare dell'Italia che era fantastica ed in modo da che era voi.

Ciao
L.S.

Learning Connections

This year we have a new subject it has all lessonsin so we dont have loads and loads of books instead we have one big book that we use for georaghy, art, history, DT and some literacy. At the moment we are are doing structures and we have to build a eco house and the other we had to make a bridge with art straws in 1 hour we are also learning how to write a news paper report and take notes. We have also done about Europe, Italy and what countries are in the European Union (EU).The eco house and the briges would class as DT but the news paper reports would class as literacy. Cool.

rugby

This term on a friday affternoon the rugby coch from Haybridge comes in. He does,

  • passing

  • running with the ball

  • dogging players

  • swiching

  • and a match at the end with us

We have dond this for 4 weeks now. We have done this because we have been chosen to be in a tournamant at haybridge.

Learning Connections

At the start of the new year we had a new curriculum and in that new curriculum we have a subject called Learning Connections. Learning Connections is where most subjects are all combined together , such as Art, Georgraphy, DT and history. When we started this new subject we based it on Europe but we finished that and we are doing Structures. When we started Structures we had to go in a group of three or for and make a bridge. The bridge had to hold one to four plastic cups full of water. And most of us completed the task - we've now got to improve and evaluate our bridge so we can do it better next time.

Learning for life academy

This year at school we have decided to do Learning for life academy (lfla for short.) It takes place on a Friday morning starting at quater past nine and ending at half ten. Lfla is where you sign up to two activity's you want to do and then the teachers will give you at least one of your choices. Some of the choices you have are Creative Crafts, Comic Genius, Nice houes shame about the garden, Grand desighns, Dragons Den, Blakedown Broardcasting and never mind the Buzzcocks. In creative crafts we have Mrs.Johns in which we do sewing. In Dragons den we are trying to raise money for the school in any way we can. For example making cards and then selling them - we do that with Mr.Marshall. Over all learning for life academy is GREAT!!!

Learning for life academy

Learning for life academy is where you have a choice of subjects. Here are some choices: Grand design, dragons den, gardening, The buzzcocks, the blakedown broadcasting group, creative crafts.

Grand design is really fun because we looked a lots of cool and wacky houses, you were given a piece of paper and you got to draw your own house, then you stick everyones house as well as yours together and you then you make your make the house 3D. Mrs Swindells is an architect, she's the one that is running the course!

L.F.L.A

On Friday we did Learning for life academy L.F.L.A for short. This is where some parents come in and teach us what they know aboutt.Every student got their own L.F.L.A booklet which we had to get sighned at the end of our session. The morning was split in to 2 and you had an hour and 15 minutes for each lesson,in between them we had break.Once the teachers had decided which activity we were going to do they said we would do those activities we would do them every Friday for 4 weeks. We had to sign up for the thing we wanted to do every child got at least one of their choices.
The different things that we could have done are:
Dragons Den with Mr.Marshall
Never mind the buzzcocs with Mrs.Sullivan
Creative crafts with Mrs Jons
Blakedown broad casting with Mrs.Brown
Nice house same about the garden with Mrs.Tromans
Grand desighns with Mrs.Swindells
Comic genius with Mr.Hanson
Eleanor

Comic Genius!!

Comic genius is run by Mr.Hanson the master of drawings. We are drawing comics. We leaned that we can draw funney comics by drawing the most simple of drawings. I'm doing about a bunny called Buzz that gets attaked by a army of spiders! Oh and did I tell you Buzz is a tae kwon do black belt!

Learning connections

In key stage two we have been doing things differently since the start of term. We've been doing a thing called Learning Connections ,its where we've mixed all the subjects into one (except maths) and put them into one big topic so far we've done Europe,Italy, and now were learning about structures :). Everyone thinks this a great idea and are really enjoying it.

E.B

Our class project: Europe

Our project for the last 3 weeks has been Europe, the European Union, Italy, immigration and why its good or bad, reports on Italy and other countries in Europe. This has been a great subject to learn about.

E.C AND C.H

Team Captains

At the start of every new year the teachers have to deside who will be the team captains the teams are Woodpeckers, Siskings, Kingfishers and Robins. There are two team captains choosen per team. In woodpeckers there is Isabelle and Callum in Siskings is Matthew and Eleanor in kingfishers are Harry and Eleanor and in Robins are James and Amelia. Every year we have sports day and who ever wins E.G Robins Amelia and James will hold the trophy.

LEGO Club

Lego club is a great thing. It is on a Tuesday lunchtime and we build LEGO.We make all sorts of things like, armies, cars, houses, shops and lots and lots more. The lego club is a great thing to do on your lunch times especially on wet ones. Its also good when you're very, very bored. People help run it. We're on the look out for more lego, so if you have any that you don't want, please bring it into school. S.S.
