It was declared an UNESCO site in 1988 and is also the site of the first battle in the Mexican War of Independence. There is now stable settlement date for the city due to the fact that it was a mining settlement for a while so settlers came and went. Another popular museum is The Museo del la Inquisicion, which is a museum of the Holy Inquisition, this features many of the torture devices used in the inquisition.
